My Top 15 Bands/Artists
#1. Sigur Rós
The thrumming bass begins. The steady tromp, tromp of drums follows along loftily. And that unearthly, melancholic falsetto resounds through your ear canals, sending goosebumps that dance up your arms and onto your neck.
“Nú vaknar þú
Allt virðist vera breytt”
Glósóli welcomes you in with open arms. The enigmatic language of Icelandic translates to a tale of a boy searching for a girl who is identified by the glowing soles of her shoes. And as that falsetto cries out once the boy finally finds her, it cries on and on and on, until the remaining instruments - that up until now have been loaming on, keeping pace - explode in the most glorious cacophony your ears have ever witnessed.
The song trickles out into innocent glockenspiels that are quickly replaced by the anthemic Hoppípolla. What could you have possibly done to deserve to hear these majestic sounds that feel like your cheek is being stroked by the cool, damp hand of some spiritual creature. Someone pulling you into a world you have never experienced before.
And this world is called Takk.

I owe everything to Sigur Rós. They’re responsible for changing my life, for making me look at music, people, the world, differently. I try to think of my past life, the life I lived before ever discovering them, and all I see are blurry pastels of what might’ve been me, but I can’t be sure. They made me believe in love at first sight, that there is still good within all of us, to treat everything with kindness, to look at the world with a wide-open and curious mind, and to live every single moment as if it was my last.
This band is capable of changing the world. If you browse through the comments people leave on any page related to them, you can see how many people have been deeply affected by them. There is something special about Sigur Rós, and I have yet to figure it out.
If you haven’t listened to them yet, please, please do. I implore you to.
Favourite Songs: Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása, Untitled 8 (Popplagið), Ný Batterí, Sæglópur, Untitled 2 (Fyrsta), Svo hljótt, Olsen Olsen, Fljótavík
First song I heard: My sister brought Takk… home sometime in 2008 and said that we had to listen, that “it makes you feel like you’re flying”. I didn’t pay much attention, being the ignorant little cunt I was, at the time. The second time I heard them was Hoppípolla, which reminded me of their existance and encouraged me to go grab an album. Ágætis Byrjun was the one I downloaded, popped onto my ipod, and began to listen to.
And the rest is history.
Favourite Album: Ágætis Byrjun, Takk… and ( ). The big 3.
Favourite Lyric:
Það besta sem guð hefur skapað er nýr dagur
When I became a fan: Immediatley after waking up from Ágætis Byrjun, I was a changed person. The beginning of summer 2010.
